An Ordinary Thanksgiving

My fabulous son Zach and his lovely wife Denny came home for a quiet holiday. My oldest son lives in a faraway place called Florida and couldn't make it home. After a good meal, pleasant conversation and fresh air, we were surprised by friends Christine and John who showed up in the evening along with the coolest dog on earth - a wolfhound named Windy. She was so mellow that even Buddha came out of hiding to investigate and Erb sat near her all evening.

This morning, everyone slept late and Buddha spent hours watching the birds bounce in and out of the pergola. Breakfast was a leisurely affair.

Nothing extraordinary happened this Thanksgiving. Or maybe it did. There were smiles, laughter, no fighting or disgruntled family members and dog and cats even got along. Friends became family and family became friends. Nothing too extraordinary but a whole lot to be thankful for.

I am serving ham this year for Thanksgiving. As I was speaking to someone yesterday about what foods we were serving, another person, someone I didn't know, overheard my conversation and chastised me for not serving a traditional turkey dinner.

So this post is just to remind everyone that Thanksgiving is not about what foods we offer our guests. It's about being grateful we have food, family and friends in the first place. Please take a minute and be grateful for whatever you have instead of focusing on what you don't have. You'll be amazed at the bounty that surrounds you.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Late November Offering

I'm in the midst of preparing for a big show and have decided no more posts until after I get through the event on Saturday. But as I was getting ready to feed Buddha and Erb, I glanced out the window and audibly gasped. Dashing outside as fast as I could, I managed to capture the essence of a truly spectacular late afternoon sky.

Another Agate Anyone?

My favorite mineral is agate, in all it's colors and forms. I just finished this painting of agate with opalite in the wee hours of the morning. It was painted with watercolor on Yupo "paper". Yupo takes forever to dry since the paint can't be absorbed. This morning, there are still numerous wet spots but I'm hoping it'll be ready to mat for a show this coming week.

Swapping Out

The cold has settled in. I have covered the air conditioners, turned the heat up and swapped out my sandals for boots and my t-shirts for sweaters. The kitties now snuggle on the blankets and sleep in a bit later in the morning, reluctant to expose themselves to the cold morning air. But the cold has brought me a beautiful sky this afternoon, a welcome sight after so many gray ceiling days.

I will be releasing my first eight images from my new card line, STONED, at my upcoming show next week. Here's a peek for those of you who can't attend the show. All the minerals were painted with watercolor on Yupo.

Angels on the Wing

I have a big show coming up in a couple of weeks. Besides my card lines and original cloud paintings, I'm offering a selection of altered vintage watercolor tins some of which I have posted previously.

I've always thought of birds as spirits/angels of the air, bringing their messages and beauty to all who appreciate them. I found this gorgeous vintage bird themed paint tin and decided to make it a tribute to birds.

It is available for purchase and inquiries should be sent to :

November Sky

Stepping outside in the early evening, I was greeted by the smell of a wood fire from my neighbor's house. The temperatures now seem to plummet as the sun lowers itself into the horizon, and fires are lit for heat and ambiance. Looking skyward, as I usually do numerous times a day,  I spotted a gorgeous tangerine streaked sky with umber and indigo clouds. While the chill settled around my shoulders, I attempted to capture the light as quickly as I could before it drained away into nighttime colors.

Kopy Kat Crazy

Here's the newest tin; a vintage Kopy Kat Watercolor Tin sporting an old cat's eye marble on the lid. Inside houses numerous cat images (many of which are reproductions of my paintings), the head of one of Buddha's mice and a reserve of kitty litter in the brush tray.

Fall Fly - Ins

It's that time of year when the migrating birds begin to fly in, resting at Pea Island, Alligator River and Lake Mattamuskeet. Some will linger for a short time, others will spend the winter here. I now look to the skies, not just for clouds, but for snow geese and swan, honking overhead as the day winds down. Buddha too keeps watch on the back of the couch for chickadees, collared doves, nuthatch and other smaller winged creatures that come to the feeders for breakfast and dinner.

Slow Moving Cloud

I've had so many turtles in my yard this fall I thought it might be fun to combine my loves; turtles and clouds. So I offer you my Sky Turtle, donning a cloud shell and hat. It's a slow moving cloud outfit and probably won't make fashion week till 2016.  Wish I could find one like this for myself!

Carolina Moon

I just finished this vintage watercolor tin, inspired by the crescent moon I've been eyeing over the past week.  This one has a hanger on  the lid so it can be hung "open" on the wall. For more info, contact me at :
