Over the Rainbow

As I crossed the bridge in October of 2010 after a visit with my son in Boone, NC where he was attending Appalachian State University, I spotted this rainbow. I asked my traveling companion to take a few pics for me for reference since I couldn't stop on the bridge to paint.

While going through my stack of older plein air cloudscapes I discovered it once again. I decided nothing could be more appropriate than adding a bluebird to this, my only plein air rainbow painting. If you're wondering about the gold image on the bottom left, it is a logo I designed to represent my Between Heaven and Earth series. I stamp it on every painting.

It's a small world.

I love all things small. The Crooked Little House is small; I drive a small car, and I work small. Whenever I see a lovely small frame I like I bring it home. Some of mine are quite old and ornate, just perfect to hold a wee bird portrait.

I spent yesterday outfitting some of my miniature frames with my plein air cloud paintings from years past. These will eventually host wrens, cardinals, bluebirds, finches, and others within their borders.

Working in miniature is quite enjoyable for me. But it's hard to convince the public that they are every bit as "worthy" of a decent price tag. Lots of people feel the price should go along with the size. Truth be told, it's much harder, at least for me, to work in miniature. But I'm doing them anyways because I think they will be charming tucked into the corner of a kitchen or powder room, bedroom or dining room.

New Holiday Brooches

Because I do a lot of shows in the fall, I begin work early on holiday items. New this year will be my holiday bird brooches. Each one is made with vintage costume jewelry and has an antique hat pin for securing the brooch to your clothing. If you would like additional information on one of these new brooches or one of my Between Heaven and Earth brooches, please contact me at:

Happy Memorial Day

My Dad was a sailor and each Memorial Day I think of him and all the other brave men and women who had more courage than I'll ever have. I keep his sailor cap hung on a hat rack near the front door as a reminder of what a wonderful father and human being he was.

This pretty boy (my Dad was very handsome) is donning that sailor cap. Though my father never got a tattoo to my knowledge, this octopus went for a mermaid one.

National Turtle Day

RH Carpenter who writes a fabulous blog, Watercolor and Words, posted that yesterday was National Turtle Day. Though I'm a day late, I would like to join in the celebration of these swell shells that live at The Crooked Little House and nest on our beaches. Of course, it's not just your regular box turtles that live in my yard, The Crooked Little House is home to a very rare species, the Turtledove, and they are only found here; no where else on earth. I wanted to take a photograph for you but they are quite shy so you'll have to accept this little painting. How lucky am I?!

W is for ...

W is for ... waterspout. We get lots of these appearing over the ocean and in the sound. Rarely do they ever come ashore and cause a problem. I find them absolutely fascinating. This poor fish though is being forced to relocate.

Pin Me

I love to experiment with new mediums. These are the things that keep an artist inspired and fresh, keeping boredom and being in a rut at bay. So this past week I decided to create two "brooches" using two of my images from  my Between Heaven and Earth series.

Each one utilizes a "bed" of beloved fabrics, crystals from an antique chandelier, a section of vintage View Master and vintage Mary medals, all secured with an antique hat pin. These were so much fun to make and I can't wait to wear one myself.

C is for ...

C is for ... chrylsalis.

A chrysalis represents change, a metamorphosis. I have always found change to be exciting, something to be explored and viewed with eager anticipation. Change shakes things up and that can be inspiring, a definite need at some points in our lives. It does not always represent something negative.

Everything eventually will change, and I think the key is to look at the changed situation in a new way. Try to learn something from it, find out how it might positively affect your life, embrace it even if it seems impossible. I am qualified to speak of these things. I've personally been through one of life's most challenging events, yet I discovered there was a lesson to be learned and still much joy to be found.

A Wedding

A proud Mom ordered this letter painting for her son and her daughter-in-law for their wedding. It was based on a favorite storybook from the groom's younger days.

May Days

May Days at The Crooked Little House.

Yesterday offered a buttermilk sky. The perfect day for peeking in on things around every corner and above every nook.

On the back hill, violets are spreading, putting up their heart-shaped heads, surveying their world.

Honeysuckle drapes itself along the deck railing;
the sweet scent wafting through the open windows.

Mr. Redbreast watches me watching him from his perch on the side fence.

My trumpet vine is full and lush, ready to offer refreshing shade
on the upcoming summer afternoons.

An abandoned House Wren nest. There was one more egg. They usually have 5 to 8 eggs. Look at the strings and feathers; even one from a Blue Jay! And I spied a piece of tinsel tucked into the grasses.

My favorite spot beneath the pergola. At night I place candles in the dragon chandelier.

Something or someone has been trying to gnaw its way into this house.

The air is punctuated with calls from this Catbird.

And two crows repeat the old rhyme from the telephone wires:
One is for sorrow; two is for mirth ...

Come back again. You're welcome anytime!

Unexpected Company

I've had visitors of all sorts lately. Each night, someone is going after my big feeder under the pergola, knocking it down and spilling all the seed. I suspect it's a raccoon. So I may take the feeder down for good today, at least for the summer, and just scatter seed on the table.

And for the first time in many years, I have a female Eastern Towhee coming to feed several times a day, bouncing back and forth between the table and the trumpet vine. Such a beautiful bird. Unlike the male with his striking black bib, the female has a dark brown one along with bright red eyes.
