It's Here!

Happy Halloween to all. I wish you good candy and one good scare, nothing serious of course, but just enough to get your blood flowing and heart racing. That's the excitement of life!

Midnight at the Oasis

Anyone recall that song, "Midnight at the Oasis?" I still have that song on vinyl and played it just the other night. It's always been a favorite of mine; just imagine - sending your camels to bed under a half moon, belly dancing for your love in a striped tent while friendly cactus sway to the music.  SIGH. Anyways, that song inspired me to create this necklace.

A New Resident

We have a new resident at The Crooked Little House - a white winged dove! Not native to our area, this dove has begun to extend its range over the past few years. Looking much like a Mourning Dove, this beauty sports a large white edge to its wing. Sorry about the poor quality of the pics.

Open for Business

Each morning brings more and more birds to the feeding table. I usually don't allow hats at the dinner table but since this feast takes place out of doors, I'll allow it!

The "winter" birds are now inching their way into our area, and The Crooked Little House dinner table will get busier each day to the delight of Buddha and Erb.

Rock Hound

I have always had a love affair with rocks. My dad would take my brother and myself rock hunting when we were young and that continued as we became adults. My children have also joined in and both have a true love of hunting for rocks and fossils. My current collection is quite extensive and they live in every room of my house.

I remember as a child having one of these souvenir rock bracelets. I think my Dad had gotten it for me. They were made in the 50s, at least the original ones. I'm sure they still make them now. I was fortunate to find a couple of the old ones recently.

This Rock Hound bracelet includes a rhinestone brooch in the center and two dangles. One dangle holds one of my bird images and the other shows the word earthen, taken from a mid 1800s dictionary. I want the wearer of the this bracelet to be reminded of our connection to the earth and the power of each stone.

Dress Rehearsal

It appears as if the residents of The Crooked Little House are all trying on their Halloween costumes to be sure they fit properly for the big night.

I'm sure you can figure out what this little frog will be.

Love is in the Air

I recently came across three of these gorgeous box of chocolate brooches so I splurged and bought them all. I used the first one to create this necklace. I call this one, Let Me Call You Sweetheart. Of course I've added a dangle of my frogs in their love boat.

Gimme Shelter

The frost may not be on the pumpkin yet, but last night my bunny took shelter inside the largest one. After he awoke, I peeked inside and saw he had left a beautiful patchwork quilt on the bottom. I fluffed it up for him since I'm sure he'll return tonight.

Pond Wizard

There is a small body of water near The Crooked Little House and sometimes, if I'm lucky, I catch a glimpse of the wizard that lives there. Magic everywhere!

It's the little things ...

One tiny geranium struggles to unfurl among a small moon flower vine that has no chance of blooming. Sad in one way yet beautiful in another. It all depends on how you look at it.

I think this is much more beautiful than a mass of flowers because it has tried so hard.

Opportunity Knocks More Than Once

I'm so pleased to announce that an assortment of my art cards is now available at Sylvan Heights Bird Park gift shop in Scotland Neck, NC.  This is one of the images of their beautiful black swan, done my way of corsa!

Cool Night, Sleeping Tight

Once the cooler nights of Autumn set in, I find the boys cuddling on my bed each evening. It's always a tricky maneuver though trying to get into bed myself.

I know, I know, just move them you say. Have you ever tried to move a 20 pounder and a fiesty Tuxedo with an attitude who weren't in agreement with your idea? And if I succeed in shifting the load, then the peace is broken and all hell breaks loose. Sometimes it's just easier to slink onto the 18 inches or so they allow me to have. Pick your battles.

One Down ...

Anyone who has ever been an exhibitor in a large show knows how grueling it can be, hauling heavy totes, racks and tools back and forth to the car. They also secretly hope that at the end of the day, they don't have a lot of stock left to haul back home

Yesterday was my first show of the fall season. It went well though I did end up bringing some things back home. Those, along with the tubs, racks and other needed items that came back with me last night, led me to the computer to order a lighter weight handcart for my next show.

Here's a couple of pics of my display, taken by a friend of mine. I think it looks inviting don't you?

Quick Update

After a few hours of quiet rest and food, the bird decided he wanted out of the cage. Maybe he had a run in with a cat or a hawk and was traumatized, requiring some time to get his bearings. So I took him outside and he promptly flew off into the Yaupon bush. My thoughts are that he would probably prefer to be outside, even if he meets his demise, rather than spend the rest of his days in a cage. I can relate.

Helplessly Hoping

I've been watching this little bird for a few days now. He manages to fly in and sit on the deck, alone. When the others fly off, he remains, regardless of the threat the other birds have detected. Each day I've ventured near but he struggles to fly off.

This morning, he barely made an effort to get away. So I scooped him up and brought him inside. I know there is nothing I can do. I know that when I peek on him at some point, probably today, he will have died. I feel so helpless. But I couldn't leave him to be ravaged by a stray cat. So I must take comfort in the fact that what I can do is give him a soft and safe place for however long he remains.

A Small Gift

I have never seen one of these insects before. Along with some dead dragonflies (I use the wings in my artwork), this was sent to me. What a surprise. After a bit of research I discovered what it was - a Horntail wasp. I love insects; perfect little machines with glorious coloring. My sketch doesn't do it justice. I also love learning something new. Win Win!

Princess and the Pea

I found this old, felt pea pod in an antique store many years ago. It had been lovingly constructed and I just had to take it home though I had no idea what I'd ever do with it. Guess what? I found the perfect place for it; included in a brooch with a small crown called, Princess and the Pea!

Here we go again!

Once again, a storm is headed our way. After a meeting, I stopped at the grocery store for the necessities in case we get a direct hit. You can probably guess what those items are; bottled water (which they were almost out of), canned foods, and most importantly Oreos and chips and salsa. Don't judge.

BUT I feel secure in the knowledge that our Storm Chaser is geared up and ready to protect us with his crabbing boots and hurricane gear. If I don't post for awhile in a few days though it'll be because we have lost power. But I'll be back.
